I can still hear the news report and Wilma Smith’s voice “the body of a young girl found in Ashland County today is Amy Mahalovic”. My phone rang and I heard wailing. It was my sister, and her daughter was also ten year’s old at the time. “This could have been Shelly!” She sobbed. We all cried. I’ve thought over the years how much her mom suffered. She died of a broken heart and so did Amanda Berry’s mom and the mother in the famous Ramsey case. So tragic. I do remember looking in the phone book at the time and noticed it odd that under Amy’s family listing there was another phone number that said “children’s line”. Did anyone ever look at that? It seemed very dangerous to me to announce that there were children in the home and publish their number in the white pages….
